Kibworth Band

Centenary Youth Brass

The Aims

To, coincide with The Kibworth Band celebrating 100 years of music making, and looking forward to the future, Ted Smith, Band Manager set about raising funds to form a second youth group to maintain the existence of the Kibworth Band The present youth group, The Kiblets, formed just over three years ago, has suffered through lack of finance to provide modern learner instruments, although the tutor, Nathan Waterman has gained much success with his current pupils.

In all, 25 appeal letters were sent to Charitable Trusts interested in youth and the Arts. The first grant came from the Local Network Fund for Children and Young People in Leicestershire and Rutland, delivered by Leicester Charity Link, followed by the Leicestershire and Rutland community champions, delivered by Leicestershire, Leicester and Rutland Community Foundation. Large grants also come from the Foyle Foundation, Awards for All and Lloyds TSB Foundation for England and Wales.

The Band now has the wonderful opportunity to invite children within the rural area covered by 'The Kibworth and District Chronicle' to apply to be considered for inclusion in the group.

The Future

The Band has formed an evening class to give young people living in a rural community the opportunity to meet and to learn the skill of playing a brass instrument or limited percussion.

Most of the arrangements are now in place. Instruments have been received and the tutors have been appointed. These are comets - Keith Brickliffe and Carol Smith: horns - Nathan Waterman: Basses - James Rennie: trombones and comets - Andy Ellis and percussion - Tim Jones

All lessons will be in small groups and will be held in the Kibworth Band Room on weekday evenings between 6 and 8pm. Although primarily aimed at young people, older students may apply. As well as encouraging young people to consider music as a hobby this venture will also give opportunity to students considering music for university study or a career.
